Mahler’s Sixth
Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025
7:30pm
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor
Orli Shaham, piano
Mahler Symphony No. 6
The legacy of the “Mahler Hammer” was set and lives on through Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 in A minor. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, the score for Symphony No. 6 notes that a hammer should strike during the symphony — what the hammer is remains a mystery. Some conductors have opted to have a steel hammer strike steel, but most construct large (massive, you might say) wooden boxes, some the size of a piano crate, and it is struck with a wooden mallet. In whatever way Mahler’s Hammer is constructed, it’s a “striking” moment to behold.
The evening will open with a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor featuring Orli Shaham.
A consummate musician recognized for her grace, subtlety and brilliance, Orli Shaham has established an impressive international reputation as one of today’s most gifted pianists, in demand for her prodigious skills and admired for her interpretations of both standard and modern repertoire. The New York Times called her a “brilliant pianist” and The Chicago Tribune referred to her as “a first – rate Mozartean .” She has performed with most of the major orchestras in the United States and with many ensembles across five continents, given recitals on stages from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House and appeared at music festivals around the world.
